Introduction
Follow the links (above) to discover more information about Irlen Syndrome
(some call this Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome)and how this syndrome can be helped.
Irlen’s syndrome is known to affect the individual in some very key areas of their life. Key areas from headaches and migraines which are induced from reading, television, bright sunlight or driving at night. The individual is often light sensitive, which may be agitated with fluroscent lighting. They may have reading difficulties and discomfort, where the page or rather the print on the page may move and this would be made worse where the paper is glossy.
Headaches and migraines may be present, which are induced from reading, television,
bright sunlight or when driving at night; the individual may be light sensitive. Academically the individual may not progress as well as they should, especially in the area of reading and maths. Note, not all people with Irlen suffer from all of the key areas mentioned, but if you recognise yourself or your child in this description, it is worhwhile finding out more and maybe following through to a test, where the clinical director or a screener will begin to help you explore different strategies to help.

People responses to the Irlen Method
An Adult Student and 2 Children said
“Thank goodness, I always thought I was stupid … now I can read, this is a relief!”
The child who was seen who said, “This helps a lot, I can see the trees!” and she further talked of “her magic glasses.”
When Carl (the Directors Son) got his new glasses he wanted to tell the world about his experience we made a video of it, which can be accessed here.
See SECTION “People Say”.
“Recognition of Irlen
“Irlen Syndrome was recognised by the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act (s100909/02).
“Further, those who are qualified teachers and have completed Irlen Training or
Diagnostician Training,”are approved by the “Joint Council for Qualifications “to make recommendations for special arrangements (reasonable adjustments).
“The Scottish Orthoptic Development Group published under the NHS Quality Assurance Agency in Scotland (March 1999) stated that “…. evidence has shown that reading speed
and comfort improve with the use of a coloured filter.”
“If you have it (Irlen Syndrome) symptoms these will have been present throughout your
life” and you may have noticed difficulty in looking at a page of print comfortably, however, you may only just have discovered that the symptoms are a syndrome which can be treated with the with the Irlen Method.
